Little Smokey Smothers már több mint 50 éve egyengeti Elvin Bishop pályáját. Most, hogy súlyos beteg lett, Bishop ezzel a CD-nek a bevételével próbálja viszonozni a hosszú évek alatt kapott segítséget.
When Elvin Bishop went to Chicago he met Chicago blues musician Little Smokey Smothers, who took that white boy from Oklahoma under his wings and learned him the finesses of playing the blues guitar. It was the beginning of a life long friendship. They both had their share of good and (sometimes very) bad luck and always they were there to support and help each other. Smokey had suffered some very serious health problems the last couple of years and Elvin initiated this CD. All revenues go to Little Smokey. With the help and generous support of all owners of these recording, like Black Magic Records and Alligator Records, this CD, containing a number of their collaborations over the years, was compiled. Two songs from the highly praised Smokey Smothers debut CD ‘Bossman; the Chicago blues of Little Smokey’, we hear, ‘Remembering’ and ‘Talkin’ Blues’ and also two songs from the CD ‘That’s My Partner’: ‘Roll Your Moneymaker’ and ‘Little Red Rooster’, a record that in my opinion had the edge over that other collaboration of that year, the King/Clapton record ‘Riding With The King’. But the recordings, made at the Chicago Blues Festival in 1993, alone are worth the price of this CD. Five songs with Smokey in front of the Elvin Bishop Band gives him the opportunity to demonstrate his great talents and play some smokin’ Chicago Blues. ‘Smokey Shuffle’, the awesome ‘Crack Head Woman’, ‘Mother-In-Law Blues’, ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ and ‘You Don’t Love Me’ are great. A very nice way also to compare the guitar playing of the master and the teacher. Smokey sounds jazzier and Elvin a more sharp sound, but the similarities are obvious. And Elvin has the edge on slide. The CD ends with two song, recorded in 2006 in the Ground Zero blues club in Clarksdale, in which you feel the pleasure of these guys playing together. This is a limited edition CD. And everybody who loves good, clean Chicago blues should add this one to his or hers record collection.
